Tension between the Afghan and American governments has reached unprecedented levels following last week’s incident where an American soldier was accused of the murder of 16 Afghan civilians. President Karzai has heavily criticised the lack of cooperation in the investigation from the American side and, after visiting the village where the killings took place and talking with the village elders, he declared that the American sergeant Robert Bales was not alone the night of the massacre; instead witnesses speak of a group of about twenty people. While the two sides are carrying out separate investigations, Karzai declared that the situation is now unbearable.
